UPDATE: Authorities identified the pilot as 69-year-old Timothy Bruce Lyons of Port Bolivar, Texas. An autopsy has not been scheduled.

One person was killed Wednesday in a southern Oregon helicopter crash, deputies say.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the helicopter went down in a densely wooded area near Interstate 5 south of Ashland. The crash was reported about 3 p.m., and search and rescue crews found the crash site and confirmed one person was dead.

The sheriff’s office didn’t release any details about the crash in a brief news release late Wednesday. The agency also didn’t release information about the helicopter or publicly identify the person who was killed, citing time needed for family notifications.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified of the crash, deputies said.
