SEATTLE — Investigators were working Tuesday to determine why the pilot of a small plane was forced to crash land Tuesday into Puget Sound off the coast of Alki Beach in West Seattle, authorities said.

A spokesman for the Seattle Fire Department said the 66-year-old pilot, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a local hospital by private vehicle.

Information about his condition was not immediately disclosed.

Authorities said the pilot was believed to be the only person on the plane when it went down into the water.

Video taken by a bystander showed the plane landing wheels down onto the water before it tipped over. Subsequent videos showed the plane floating upside down underneath the water.

It appears that no one on the ground was hurt during the crash landing.
