COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Ohio State Highway Patrol said one person was killed in a small-engine plane crash Tuesday in Licking County.

OSHP said the pilot, 74-year-old Paul R. Brown, of Zanesville, was the only person on the plane. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Brown was the fifth president at Zane State College in Zanesville.

Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said the small-engine plane crash happened in the area of Linnville Road in Heath Tuesday afternoon.

OSHP said the crash happened about a minute after the 2005 Cessna Skylane took off from Newark-Heath Airport at 1:37 p.m. Tuesday.

According to troopers, the plane crashed into trees and a guard rail before sliding down a hill. It came to a stop about 100 yards from nearby homes.

Investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration are working to determine what caused the crash and if there were any distress signals broadcast before the crash.
