A Colby man suffered only minor injuries when he crashed his small plane early Wednesday morning, shortly after takeoff from the Colby Airport.

Pilot Kelly B. Gabel, 40, told Kansas Highway Patrol investigators that when he took off from the airport in his Beech aircraft shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, the wheel dolly did not detach from the front wheel.

When he got into the air and noticed the dolly still attached, he called the fire department. But, while the fire department was en route, the right engine on the fixed-wing multi-engine airplane failed, and the pilot had to conduct a crash landing. He crashed in a field about a half-mile east of the airport.

Gabel was taken to Citizens Medical Center in Colby with suspected minor injuries.
