Port Elgin | by Matt Hermiz

Emergency services responded to incident just prior to 1 p.m. near Port Elgin Airport.
A couple walked away from a plane crash near the Port Elgin Airport with only minor injuries Friday afternoon.

Saugeen Shores Police, Firefighters and Bruce County EMS were called to the small, single engine plane crash just south of town limits — at Snyder’s Gravel pit off Highway 21 — just before 1 p.m.

Witnesses at the scene say there were two passengers in the plane, a male and a female, who managed to walk out of the wreck.

The plane suffered extensive damage, was found upside down and part of it caught fire as a result of the crash.

It’s not immediately clear what caused the crash. Weather is not believed to be a factor in the incident.

Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Phil Eagleson says it’s presumed the plane was landing. He confirms a male and a female occupant, neither from the local area, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Southampton Hospital for observation.

“They were very lucky,” Eagleson says. “It was a plane crash and they walked away with only scratches really.”

The scene was secured by authorities. Transport Canada will be investigating.
