At approximately 1:42 p.m. a plane crashed in the northern section of Sault Ste. Marie.

Sault Fire Services, Paramedics and Police were all notified by the air traffic control tower of the emergency situation.

The pilot as heard on Sault Ste. Marie air traffic control channels declared an emergency just prior to his plane descending into a forest near Camp Korah on Goulais Avenue.

At 1:38 the pilot can be heard speaking with ATC looking declaring he was low on fuel and admitting the plane was relatively new to him.

At 1:42 p.m. the pilot noted – “Papa Echo Papa, now I’m declaring and emergency, the engine just quit.”

Less than a minute later he said “Papa, Echo, Papa, I’m down.”

This led to ATC putting into effect a series of preplanned actions. The ATC controller can be heard telling the pilot she would be sending “the proper authorities” to him.

A few seconds later the pilot declared he was okay.

Authorities will be on scene for some time. We have been in contact with Canadian Transport Safety Board of Canada and will bring you their response when it is made available.
