EMERGENCY crews were called to an incident at Sandown Airport this afternoon (Monday).

A plane was seen to crash land on rough grass off the runway.

A County Press reader who witnessed the event said the undercarriage failed to deploy, so the pilot flew around to deplete the craft’s fuel before landing the Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche safely on its belly.

No one is thought to be seriously injured.

A spokesperson for Shanklin Fire Service confirmed no action was taken by the fire crew, but an inspection was carried out.

Police officers were among those in attendance.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: “At 1.05pm, we were made aware of a plane due to land at Sandown Airport this afternoon which had reported difficulties.

“The plane landed safely at 1.29pm.”
