KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said there were no major injuries reported when a single-engine plane crashed Friday near the Gardner Municipal Airport.

Photos shared on social media by the sheriff’s office show a single-engine Cessna 182Q upside down in a dirt field.

The 43-year-old plane had taken off from New Century Airport and was headed southwest near Melvern, Kansas, when the pilot noticed engine trouble, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

The pilot tried to return to New Century before the crash but would up crashing closer to the Gardner airport, which is located about four miles southwest of New Century.

“After turning back, the pilot stated the aircraft experienced a complete engine failure and the cockpit filled with smoke,” the Kansas Highway Patrol report said. “The pilot performed an emergency descent and forced landing in a fallow field just south of Gardner Municipal Airport.”

During the emergency landing, the plane struck a culvert, the front end tipped down and the plane flipped onto its top, but neither the pilot nor a passenger were injured.

A log of the aircraft’s tail number shows it took off around 11 a.m. Friday from New Century Air Center and then made an approach to the Gardner airport, which is located west of U.S. 56 along West 175th Street.

A log of emergency calls shows first responders arrived at the scene around 11:48 a.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear how far from the airport the crash happened.
