Four soldiers have been killed and another wounded after a military helicopter crashed into a residential area this morning in Istanbul. The helicopter split in two after coming down between two blocks of flats. It had been taking part in training flights in the run-up to the crash, hitting the roof of a building before plummeting to earth.
Governor Ali Yerlikaya said: ‘Treatment for the wounded and an inspection into the cause of the incident has been started. Efforts at the crash site are underway.’
Pictures from the scene show the wreckage of the aircraft in the middle of the street where a large cordon has been set up. The helicopter took off from the Samandira air base and came down in the Sancaktepe neighbourhood.
