AUDUBON – A helicopter crash was reported east of Hamlin on Robin Avenue, south of Highway 44 on Tuesday.
The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a helicopter crash in eastern Audubon County from the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 4:27 pm.
The crash was located south of Highway 44 on Robin Avenue near 240th, and law enforcement had roads blocked in the area.
A witness, working in the area, reported seeing the low flying helicopter. He said it clipped electric transmission lines, flipped over and burst into flames when it hit the ground.
Responders had to be careful to avoid downed power lines, and the crash caused a grass fire. There was no word on who was in the helicopter.
The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, Guthrie County EMA, Audubon County EMA, Audubon Fire and Rescue, Exira Fire Department, Audubon County Secondary Roads, Iowa State Patrol and the FAA.
The accident remains under investigation and no further releases will be made until the investigation is concluded.
