SCIO, Ore. — A helicopter pilot walked away unhurt after a crash in Linn County on Monday, deputies say.

Deputies were called to the helicopter crash just after 3:10 p.m. in the 39000 block of Fish Hatchery Drive, near Scio.

According to the Linn County Sheriff’s Office, the caller reported a two-person helicopter had crashed and the injuries were unknown.

Multiple fire department personnel and deputies responded to the scene and found the operator, 74-year-old Jack Elvin, walking around near the crash site.

Elvin was the only person in the helicopter, deputies said. He described having a mechanical failure when trying to land his experimental helicopter.

The helicopter sustained major damage to several components, deputies said.

Elvin said he was not hurt.
