LABELLE, Fla.– One man was killed when the plane they were in crashed next to the Church of the Good Shepherd in Hendry County on Thursday afternoon.

Another man inside the plane was injured in the crash. First responders said he is expected to be okay.

The man injured in the crash said he thinks the engine failed. It’s not known what caused the engine failure.

No one was inside the church when the plane slammed into the ground, just feet from the building.

Deputies with the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene around 3:20 pm.

Authorities have asked people to avoid the area of Collingswood and Eucalyptus Boulevard as crews investigate.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the plane was a twin-engine Piper Aerostar. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.

Sheriff Whidden said he believes the plane took off from LaBelle airport.
