LAKEWAY, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) – One person was killed and another was injured after a plane crashed in Lakeway.

The small aircraft crashed in the area of the Hills Drive and Lakeway Boulevard around 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, not far from the airport’s runway. When first responders arrived on scene, both people in the airplane were unconscious. CPR was administered to at least one of the victims.

The airplane was attempting to land and officials don’t know what caused the aircraft to go down.

According to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, both were declared trauma alerts. One person was taken to Baylor Scott & White Lakeway Regional Medical Center.

It’s not clear who was piloting the plane, but officers with the Lakeway Police Department have identified the person who died as Kevin Wayne Henderson from the San Marcos area.

Randall Scott Nelson is in critical but stable condition.

Police tell us the plane tried to land twice before it crashed.

An off duty lieutenant with Lake Travis Fire Rescue was golfing when he heard screams and ran over to see what was going on. “I treated it like it was any other critical condition incident. I parked my car like I was on duty, told everyone to get back after I saw the fuel lines going off pretty hard.” said Chris Wood with the Lake Travis Fire Rescue (off duty).

First responders are expected to be in the area for a while.

Drivers should seek alternate routes and avoid the area, if possible.
