A pilot has been rescued by emergency crews after a plane crashed near an aerodrome in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt on Thursday afternoon.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services crews from the surrounding districts and St John Ambulance teams rushed to the scene at the Narrogin Aerodrome.

A St John Ambulance spokeswoman said a person was trapped in the wreckage for a short amount of time and had received minor injuries.

Aerial images obtained by Nine News Perth show parts of the plane wreckage scattered near the airstrip’s runway and fuselage sitting upsidedown on a field.

A rescue helicopter was called but was stood down at 4.30pm. The pilot has since been taken to Narrogin Hospital by ambulance.

A DFES spokeswoman said the pilot was the only person on board the aircraft.

The aerodrome is located about 10 kilometres west of Narrogin on Clayton Road.

It is not the first time plane occupants have miraculously escaped serious injury after crashing in the region.

In 2016, a 64-year-old pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after his plane experienced technical difficulties while flying over the Wheatbelt, crashing in the Piesseville area near Wagin.

Both the pilot and a passenger, also in his 60s, escaped with minor injuries.
