A single-engine aircraft crashed Friday evening at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

Authorities received reports of the incident around 5 p.m. Friday before a pilot was taken away in an ambulance, according to the airport office headquarters.

“It was a single-engine aircraft — one of the local commemorative Air Force aircraft,” said Dan Letellier, executive director at Sioux Falls Regional Airport, who said the crash occurred during a landing attempt on the airport’s northeast runway. “We’re investigating the incident right now and trying to get this taken care of.”

The extent of the pilot’s injuries are not known, Letellier said.

Some flights have been delayed, as all runways were closed for a period of time following the crash. But Letellier said the flight schedule was expected to resume around 6 p.m.

“We hope to get at least one of the runways open fairly soon,” he said.

It’s the third incident involving a plane at the Sioux Falls airport in the past month.

Two F-16s ran off the runway in May, though there were no serious injuries, Air Guard officials said at the time.
