OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. — A pilot is uninjured after a banner-towing plane went into the Gulf off Okaloosa Island Thursday.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says the incident happened around 2:20 p.m. about 200 yards offshore and about 300 yards east of the Okaloosa Island Pier.

The pilot climbed out of the aircraft and was uninjured.

First responders recovered the pilot onto a boat and headed back to shore within about 15 minutes.

Deputies say there is no word yet on what led to the incident. It is being investigated by the FAA.

“He was towing a 90 foot advertisement banner that he ditched in the water prior to landing,” deputies say. “That banner has been recovered.”
