Cal Fire and Placer County firefighters responded to a report of a down aircraft near the Auburn Municipal Airport in North Auburn after 11 a.m. Saturday.

Firefighters found a small aircraft with two passengers upon arrival, according to Cal Fire. There is one confirmed fatality as a result of the crash and one passenger sustained minor injuries.

The small, single-engine plane took crashed into a field northwest of the runway, according to Lt. Andrew Scott, Placer County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.

“I could hear it sputtering and it made a really hard right to miss the homes and it instantly caught fire,” a neighbor near the crash site told CBS.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, its Critical Accident Investigation Team and detectives will be investigating the crash site. The National Transportation Safety Board will participate in the investigation virtually, due to COVID-19 concerns.

No other details have been released at this time.

On Jan. 24, three individuals were involved in a plane crash near the Black Oak Golf Course and near Dry Creek Road in Auburn. Anthony Lawrence Wright Sr. and Anthony Lawrence Wright Jr. were killed as a result of that crash.
