Emergency crews were alerted to a plane that went off a runway Wednesday at Reading Regional Airport in Bern Township.

The incident occurred about 4 p.m.

Airport personnel on scene said there were nine people on board and that it was unclear why the plane didn’t stay on the runway. It stopped in soft material on the edge of the runway, according to reports.

Officials were waiting for investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and other investigators to arrive, according to reports.

Airport personnel waved off help from area fire companies, just asking for them to stand by.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued this statement Wednesday night:

“A Cessna Citation C56 business jet ran off the end of the runway at Reading Regional Airport in Reading, Penn., today at approximately 4:00 p.m. local time. Nine people were aboard. The FAA will investigate. The FAA does not identify people involved in aircraft accidents.”
