UNION COUNTY, Ga. — A pilot died in a plane crash on Wednesday morning on the Lake Nottely shoreline in Union County, Georgia, according to a North Georgia News Facebook post.
The outlet says crash was due to limited visibility from heavy fog.
The still-unidentified pilot was the only person involved in the crash.
The post by North Georgia News quotes a Union County Sheriff’s Office Captain saying the pilot was on his way to Florida at the time of the accident.
A person across the lake from the crash site saw the accident and called 911 at 8:17 a.m., Union County Sheriff’s Capt. Craig Davenport says.
The airplane took off into the dense fog from the Blairsville Municipal Airport, about two miles away from where it crashed. The plane was in the air for about 10 minutes.
The plane clipped a grove of trees as it descended toward the lake before hitting the ground on the shore of a cove on Lake Nottely.
The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the crash.
