VENICE, FL (WWSB) – A small plane ran off the runway Friday morning at the Venice Municipal Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident that involved a small airplane Friday morning in Venice. The occupants of a Mooney Ovation2, a male student pilot and a female instructor, were not hurt. The Mooney Ovation2 is a single-engine, 4-seater aircraft.
According to Airport Director Mark Cervasio, the student pilot and instructor had taken off earlier in the day from Page Field in Fort Myers. As the student pilot attempted to land at Venice Airport around 10:40 a.m., he encountered a crosswind and lost control of the plane, according to the instructor, who immediately took control of the aircraft.
The airplane ended up in a drainage ditch near midfield, damaging the plane’s nose gear and propeller.
There were no injuries.
The aircraft is in a secured hangar at the airport until the FAA’s Flight Standards District Office out of Tampa completes its investigation.
