By now everyone in our profession has heard the tragic news of the loss of firefighters Angel Torres and Nicolás Santa Gadea as well as the serious injuries sustained by another after the collision of an ARFF apparatus and a Latam Airways Group Airbus A-320 Neo at Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima.

First and foremost, our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends, as well as their Brothers and Sisters from their fire department who worked side by side with them regularly.

The investigation to find a cause for this tragedy is underway and we await the report(s). As we wait for them come out, let’s all keep the guessing, rumors and blaming quiet. As my friend and ARFF Brother Jack Kreckie stated, “As the facts emerge, we all need to focus on training issues that may help prevent such tragedies. At least 2 lives were lost today and many lives were changed forever. Let’s make this a learning moment”!

Brothers and Sisters, please keep your heads on a swivel and maintain full situational awareness whenever operating on your airfield. Even after receiving clearance to cross any runway, ALWAYS slow down or stop and LOOK BOTH WAYS before crossing those hold short bars, be safe out there!!!

Please take a moment to say a prayer for our fallen brothers and their families.

Now here are the stories for today…

Be safe out there!!!
