For the past few days I’ve been trying to come up with words to say about the passing of a man that left an indelible mark on me. This past weekend, Retired FDNY Captain John Vigiano, Sr. passed away after a long battle with cancer.

I was introduced to John by a common friend, Jim Regan, a retired Western Springs, Illinois firefighter. Jim sent me an article written by Larry Provost titled FDNY Hero’s Legacy of Sacrifice and Service” that I urge you all to read (it leads the top of today’s stories). The article describes better than I ever could the legacy of John, his wife Jan and their only two children Joe and John Jr, both murdered on 9-11-2001.

I only had the honor of meeting John a few times, in both Chicago and in New York, but I found him and his wife Jan to be the gentlest, yet strongest, people I have ever met.

John will be missed by the many, many lives he touched, including mine. May he rest in peace and I pray that God brings peace and comfort to Jan and the rest of their family.

I close with a quote from Jim Regan about his friend “A great and wonderful man. Until we meet again…….”

Be safe out there!

Tom
