“We would like to inform you that the runway of the Vilnius airport is open for business from 17:00 after the incident that happened this afternoon. and flights will continue as usual”, said the representative of Lithuanian airports.
On Saturday around 2:20 p.m. An “Avion Express” passenger plane, operating a chartered flight from Milan, skidded off the runway at Vilnius airport.
According to initial data, there were 179 passengers and 6 crew members on the aircraft, the crew of the aircraft informed the airport authorities that no one was injured and the aircraft taxied to the parking lot on the platform, where the passengers were disembarked.
As stated by LRT.lt, a reader who was on the plane that skidded off the runway, the plane first landed on the runway, then slid into the grass, and then returned to the runway again.
“When the plane landed on the grass, mud began to spray on its windows, you couldn’t see anything through them anymore,” says the reader.
“In order to assess the impact of the incident on the runway equipment, inspections are currently underway, so the airport is closed for all flights until 5:40 p.m.,” airport representative Tadas Vasiliauskas announced a little earlier.
Lithuanian airports claim that the circumstances and causes of the incident are being investigated.
As announced, returning flights were diverted to Kaunas and Palanga airports for some time.
The Avion Express company also announced on Saturday that it has launched an investigation, during which the causes of the incident will be investigated in detail. The company also promises to cooperate with the responsible authorities.
