One man hurt when plane crashes near Thaden Field in Bentonville

by NWA Democrat-Gazette

BENTONVILLE — A man was injured when a plane crashed Thursday afternoon near Thaden Field, according to Bentonville Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Boydston.

Firefighters and other first responders were dispatched around 3:20 p.m. to the crash in a field at the southwest corner of Southwest 14th and Southwest I streets, city spokesman Payton McCormick said.

Two men were on board a single-engine Comanche 250 when the plane went down, according to Boydston.

It appears that as the plane was approaching the airport, it had engine problems and was unable to make it to the runway, Boydston said. One man suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, he added.

The other passenger was on the scene with tissue paper on one side of his nose and bleeding from an injury near his mouth, but he declined to comment.

By 4 p.m., emergency services personnel were beginning to leave the scene.

Debbie Herndon of Centerton said she was at the traffic light on I Street getting ready to turn right onto 14th Street when the plane flew nearby traveling north to south.

“It was so low, I just started saying OMG several times, then it hit the ground,” Herndon said.

She said she called 911 and someone had already reported the crash.

“I pulled in to Aldi’s parking lot, but I could not see from that distance if anyone exited the aircraft,” Herndon said. “I did see people pull over on I Street and run to the plane.”

Responders left yellow tape around the plane, and the Federal Aviation Administration will need to investigate the scene before the plane is removed from the field, Boydston said.

Gene Holland, a battalion chief for the Fire Department, said a police officer will make sure the plane is secure until FAA officials arrive.

The plane is registered to Mark A. Wilkerson of Madison, Ind., according to FAA records.
